Role
Designer, Lead Designer
With the move of office buildings, the new HOK Seattle office presented an opportunity for a new signage and graphics program, as HOK did not yet have an office standard. This design I helped create sparked a standards system for other offices like St. Louis, Salt Lake City, and Chicago.
As an architectural firm committed to sustainability and the community of Seattle, the conceptual narrative of the new space was “changing the landscape”. We focused on the intersection of technology we use and the landscapes we affect with architecture, using graphic content like the natural topography lines on the floor connecting digitally fabricated custom wood fins or the digital pixelization of an organic hand-drawn landscape as a wall mural. These elements made the space uniquely Pacific Northwest and uniquely HOK.
We also had a special opportunity to hand-paint the mural as an office. My design partner and I coordinated efforts, sourced paint and resources, and tested prototypes to realize it. I wanted each person in the office to feel they had a hand in “changing the landscape,” with a daily reminder of their impact on the company.
