A new building and parking garage on the Seattle Children’s Hospital campus was designed and built with the intention of creating a new main entrance to the hospital. A large effort of this program was implementing the existing campus-wide program into this new wing, as well as introducing new elements to expand upon and clearly convey the overarching story of the hospital. I was key in developing this story and implementing the signage and graphics as a part of this program—from concept through installation.
With supportive care at the heart of the hospital’s message and brand, the signage and graphics relate in a way that provides clarity, as well as joy, to patients and families in the space. Expanding on the PNW-based “zones” of the hospital (Forest, River, Mountain, and Ocean), I helped develop and clearly identify a connecting path through every zone, described as the “Discovery Trail”. A related main feature to this new space was the addition of a hospital map for context as one enters and orients themselves in the space.
To ensure hospital-wide consistency, I led the effort to assess and revise all existing hospital signage. As a result, I developed a comprehensive Wayfinding and Graphics Standards document for record and daily use at the hospital. My work helped create a unified and effective wayfinding system that enhances the hospital experience for patients, families, and visitors.
